This course is designed to help students (ages 12+) build a strong foundation in art as they prepare for the Art O-Level exam. Whether they plan to take art as a subject in school or sit for the exam privately, this course provides essential training in drawing, painting, printmaking, and mixed media techniques. 

Students will explore a wide range of dry and wet media, including:

  • Sketching pencils & coloured pencils – Developing shading, texture, and colour blending skills

  • Pen & ink – Exploring line work, cross-hatching, and tonal values

  • Watercolours & acrylics – Understanding layering, washes, and brush techniques

  • Oil pastels – Creating bold, expressive works with rich textures

  • Lino printing – Learning the basics of relief printing and pattern design

  • Canvas painting – Composing and painting with confidence on a larger scale

A key focus of the course is on portfolio development, where students will learn how to plan, refine, and sequence their work, an essential skill for exam success. Through hands-on projects and personalised tutor guidance, they will also build creative confidence and develop their own artistic style.

The course is structured into four modules, each with 10 lessons that explore different techniques and themes. These modules can be taken in any order, allowing flexibility for students to join at any time.

Course Modules

Module 1: Exploring media such as pen and ink, charcoal, acrylics and the lino printing technique. 

Module 2: Working with dry media including graphite pencils, pencil colours and oil pastels to create expressive artworks. Also working with acrylic paint as a wet media. 

Module 3: Introducing watercolour painting and mixed media using oil pastels, charcoal and fineliners. 

Module 4: Bringing together all media used and techniques learnt throughout the modules. 

Upon completing all four modules, students will have the technical skills, creative confidence, and structured portfolio necessary to advance to the O-Level Art Class (Ages 13+) at Art Academy.

Course Details

  • Mode of Study: Once weekly (2 hours each lesson)

  • Duration: 10 lessons per semester (4 semesters in total)

  • Location: Art Academy Mosta (Art Academy, 131, Constitution Street, Mosta)

  • Requirements: Students need to bring their own materials and need to be over 12 years of age.

  • What’s Included: Hands-on teaching, individual attention, practice and theory, course-work guidance.

  • Certification: Upon attendance of 80% of the Course, students will be accredited for their Informal Learning and given a signed and stamped form for their Informal Education by the Institute.

Tax Deduction on Fees paid for Cultural and Creative Courses:

Parents of children under 16 who attended any Cultural or Creative courses at Art Academy are eligible for a tax deduction scheme of up to a maximum of €300 for each child. Parents are entitled to claim a deduction against their chargeable income of up to a maximum of €300 for each child. 

You don't need to do anything, we will apply for you after the completion of the course.
